Re-Posted from "Best Day of 2002" thread:
One above the rest...
...stands out as the best.
The Sixth Annual Cuttyhunk Open fell on the first weekend of October this year as it had the previous year. Unfortunately, it was also the weekend of my family reunion in Vermont - same as last year. However, I was NOT going to miss the fishing for a second year in a row - especially with a tasty so'wester brewing. Unfortunately, my family doesn't have the clarity of vision to see the importance of fishing the fall run. So I asked myself: "Self, can a man be in two places at once?" Self said "Yes!".
Hooky on Friday into a great night of fishing, followed by a even better morning, off the island at 10am with fresh morning fillets on ice. My mind raced with the totality of the previous twelve hours - new friends and old, great Cuttyhunk conditions, the anticipation than comes with each cast when the big bite is on, and on, and on.
This best of days was capped by a great evening with extended family in a rustic lodge during the peak of autumn in the South Pomfret hills. Twenty-six of us took our places at the long table as a perfectly herbed poached striped bass dinner emerged from the kitchen for all to enjoy. This Cuttyhunk bass had completed its journey. I smiled to myself as the bass melted in mouth and those around me complemented the chef and thanked the fisherman. A little more wine, a little more bass. If only each day could be so good...
Maybe some Reel-Timers want to get in on the fun next year...?
