I have never gone ice fishing before and I was thinking of trying it this year. What is the rule of thumb or unspoken word with regard to existing holes? I don't have an auger so drilling a new hole maybe tough. If I came upon a hole is it exceptable to use it? What is the best type of gear..tip ups or regular fishing rod. I would imagine it is probably preference.
Any thought or comments would be helpfull!
Thanks!

I sometimes punch through old holes, but if anyone's near them I'll ask first.
Both tip ups and a small jigging rod are effective. Sometimes, a tiny Kastmaster or teardrop spoon on a jigging rod can save the day when hits on tip ups are few.

You can get a simple chipper to use to open up old holes. The way this temperature has been, they may freeze too solid to kick open over night.
Since Your allowed 5 lines in mass. I set 4 tip ups and jig with a small swedish pimple.
A few people like to come late in the day when others are leaving. They go from hole to hole jigging.
