Mike
Not being able to view the forums for a while, it wasn't till today that I found your remarkable fly tying Flatwing presentation.
A most remarkble job, anyone should be able to tie a flatwing after studing your detailed instructions.
I only have one question, do you tie all your hackle on top of the pillow?
Every other aspect is very clear, again thanks for your unselfish consideration of most that are just starting in this wonderful hobby.

Yes Joe, all are tied on the pillow, actually on the front edge of the pillow so the pillow will still show.

Questions #2 and #3 - what material do you use for the pillow? I read references to the pillow being dubbed. I have a selection of dubbing but not the bright red color you use. Are there instructions somewhere online for tying the Razzle Dazzle?

I used the soft fuzzy fibers from the base of a red feather to dub the pillow. I don't know anywhere online w/ the tying instructions. The pattern is in Kenny's books. If you need it I can post it for you. Here is a pic.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am going to try my hand at tying some flatwings. I plan to concentrate on one or two patterns. Is there any pattern that is more successful than others? I will either borrow the book from a friend or buy it, I was just looking for some instant gratification. Thanks also for mentioning your source for jungle cock on ebay. He has an auction going now where I will pick up eyes. I have been dying my own hackles and bucktail for this project. Having the time of my life!

Depends....For a searching pattern I have done well w/ a white, yellow and chartruse combo, like my "Yellow jacket" which I did the 2nd flatwing article on.
What is the primary baitfish in your area? Tie something to imitate it. LMK what it is and I can give you some suggestions if you want.

Even though I'm the only angler on the planet who doesn't get results with chartreuse, I think I'll take your advice and start with your Yellow Jacket. I have materials in those colors already. As far as imitating bait fish, I am imitating sand eels when fishing flats, and juvenile bunker when fishing in deeper water later in the season. Up to now I have had great success with flies that employ a chunk of hourglass shaped lead near the eye. (Don't want to use the "C" word. I have been at shows and seen Abrames face when the word is mentioned, looks like it causes him pain). Thank you for your help and advice.

Then try 2 white, one yellow saddle for the tail, white collar, yellow wing. For sand eels try a single feather flatwing , yellow saddle, white marabou throat, yellow and olive bucktail mixed for the wing.add 4-5 hairs orange for cheeks. Small bunker(5-7") I like a 4 feather flatwing . White, yellow, pink or lt. purple and olive .Collar white, wing olive. Cheeks chartruse, blue, pink, 4 hairs each.

Not wanting to sound too ignorant here, but Quick...you mentioned Ken A. cringing at the "C" word. Is that chartruese?

Why does Abrames cringe at the word clouser? Is it the fly or Bob Clouser himself?

Because he does not consider it a fly.

Let me try to put this in a way Ken might respond (just from reading his board):
Flies are flies and lures are lures. There were days when fly fisherman fished with hand crafted flies and casters with lures. Now a days when they fish, they do it with replicas sold by salesman.
There that should answer all your questions... Having said that, if the salesman is a fly fisherman, fishing with flatwings on a floating line, then thats ok so please go and buy some flatwings.
Clousers are weighted, and therefore the anti-fly, a lure. But it is ok to use split shot on your leaders, go figure?
(disclaimer: I find flatwings to be very succesfull, and he does have a point with comercialism, I just get tired of the preachy chip on the shoulder as the general vibe I get from his board)

Flat Wings were not discovered by him... if you read Lefty Kreh's description and by Ken's own admission.Ken has popularized the Flat Wing. A clouser IS a fly just as Bob Popovics surf Candies are flies.Fly tying "evolves" as time marches on. Ken mainatains that the clouser is a jig. It's his opinion..I don't agree, but we are all entilted to our own opinions.
