Sorry for the never ending beginner questions - I am equally intriuged with doing this right as I am with actually doing it.

When you put the Cedar plugs in a chain are they all plugs with hooks? Saw a set-up in magazine where only one plug had the hook? What's the plan for doing the chain (I got an excellent book on rigging - so I am starting to practice) ??

Feathers - again are we putting these in a chain and are they always rigged with hooks ( I assume I am buying them without hooks - catalog shows em without hooks)

Last question - (this one is going to open a can of worms) what am I loading the 50's with as far as line goes - and how much of it. I assume you guys are using mono but have scene braid for offshore so just want to get some input

I owe you guys a day of fishing - that is if I can afford to fill my boat at $2.50 a gallon OUCH

To see the right way(Josko and I did it mostly right..) to rig cedar plugs get the fall 99 Big Game Fishing Journal - it has a good article on how to set up chains. Anyways; you rig them w/ only the rear lure having a hook; the others are teasers to simulate a school of bait. In theory predator sees the commotion and comes up and whacks the rear lure which is the one w/ the hook.

Briefly (read the article; its better) you have an 8 or 10' leader w/ a couple extra sleeves between lure and loop. Hook at the business end; biggest lure in front of that. Now take the extra sleeves and position them just right and crimp about 18-24 " of line into the sleeve; hang a hookless lure off the other end. The idea is to get 3-4 lures in a christmas tree w/ the hookless lures positioned so they are a few inches above the crimp of the next lure in the chain. Go to a tackle shop and look; its pretty obvious once you see it and I'm doing a lousy job of describing it.

All the lures are bought w.out hooks; we used 7/0 or 8/0 hooks - Josko knows the # cold; I forget it (77-something) and used beads to position the hook in the lure so the hook is just about even w/ the ends of the feathers or plastics.

Josko can answer the line one - I know he overlined his 50's w/ 80# mono last year but is redoing things this year w. spectra braid and a 100 yard top shot of mono. The idea is to get more line on the reel just in case. I beleive he was able to get 500 yards or so of 80# line on the 50W's and 500 yards of 50# mono on thr 30W's.

2.50 a gallon - we hope. We were talking about it last weekend and are afraid of $3.00/gallon.

BTW - did you get an auxiliary tank for you boat? As i recall you had a main 150 gallon tank and were looking for a 2nd tank.

Cedar plug chains. Try the 6' or 4" (teaser) plugs instead of the big 8". Space them so the end of the teasers is ~4" ahead of the next crimp on main line. Longer dropper lines give better action but also tangle like crazy.

Hooks: my favorite is mustad 7731S (stainless!) but the most prevalent one is mustad 7691S 'southern tuna'. I use 7/0 or 8/0 for small lures and feathers, bend just even with the bottom of the skirt. Cedar plugs need mustad 'needle eye' hooks, 8/0 for 6" 10/0 for 8"

I used 80# Ande tournament green on 50SW reels, 50# on 30TW reels. This season I'll try a couple of 50's with 135# izorline spectra and 100 yds of 100# mono topshot. I wanna know if I can go stand-up with a big BFT. Set strike drags to 1/3 of line breaking strength.

I know I *don't* want to go standup w/ a big BFT - rod's yours; I'll take the rats :-)
