Guys,

I'm think this is the year I break away from shore and fish from a kayak. I've been looking at few different ones. Any opinions on the Pamlico 14 from Wilderness systems?

Ray-
It looks very similar to my Perception. Long enough for speed and gear and wide enough to make a good stripping basket. Don't know it first hand but here are some things to consider...

Where do you plan to yak?

How do you plan to fish with it (run-n-gun tunoids / tub-n-worm / blind casting / etc)?

Are you prepared to take on another addiction :)

I purchased the Pamlico Angler last season and had good experiences with it this past year. The boat seems to be pretty stable but can get a little rocky side to side at times. I like that the boat has a large cockpit-great for storage-stripping basket and whatever else you need. The seat lacks padding but is comfortable. The boat is on the heavy side and with the length can make loading and unloading it onto my Montero Sport tricky at times. Overall I am very happy with it.

RAY,

Hold on buddy! Don't commit until you spend the weekend in Orleans at the Goose Hummock yak event in Mid May. Paddle that Pamlico and the Pungo series, and (God forbid) even a SOT. I might even try the "darkside" with you. Check with the Hummock, If I remember correctly they handle the full Wilderness System.

Points to ponder!

Yaks purchased in RI are not taxed! The $56- $60 bucks saved on a $700 Pungo will go a long way towards a decent paddle purchase, a quality rod holder set up, PFD, Box of twinkies for survival food locker, etc.

Pungos weigh 49 lbs w/o paddle, Pfd, etc. Check the Pamlico wt. I have a Pamlico Tandem for sale that it weighs 70-pounds. It's a great stable fishing platform but too heavy for this child. The P-14 should be lighter.

Humping a 50 pound yak from parking lot to launch point isn't too bad, the 70#er is a different "hump" altogether. Although the tandem should be a great vehicle for you to "pick up chicks" on the Vineyard with!

Go Plastic! It is tough and durable. Kelvar is lighter, but very expensive! And the lighter weight is great for carrying it to and fro, but the lightness in the water makes it a little less stable IMHO.

Check w/ RIBill he has your BB shirt!:-%

Ray,

I spoke to my favorite Wilderness Systems dealer and looked at the new Pungo line. The Pungo 120 is perfect for you! It is 44 lbs and will handle your wt better than the 140. Both the 120 and the 140 are lighter than the Pamlico comparables. Cheaper too in purchase price. The 140 will ride higher in the water than the 120 and take longer to turn for your physical size. You will be able to kick Sam (Skunk Boy) Riley's butt recing to the toniod blitz's this fall at Menemsha with the Pungo 120! You betcha! My expert said ht., wt. and reach are a consideration.

I'm trading in my Pamlico tandem for the new Pungo 140 in bright yellow come April. I'll keep the sand colored 12 foot, Pungo Angler for duck hunting and the occasional guest.

See ya in May!:-% --125-3
