In the past, fishing the Salmon River in March has been great. I love that time of the season much more than the fall run, as it is strictly limited to steelhead and brownies. That said, I haven't made it out for a couple of years, although I am having cocktails tonight with one of my buddies who fishes it regularly (he lives an hour away).

I'll used to have an exellent list of web resources for that area. I'll see if I can't google up a new list.

By all means, plan on fishing in March. Snow can be a major issue though.

I forgot to mention that you should get in touch with Randy Jones, who guides out there in the fall and spring - he does summers at Monomoy and is a regular here. His website is here (http://www.yankeeangler.com/)

Article on Winter Steelhead on CentralNewYorker.com (http://www.centralnewyorker.com/CNYflyfisherman.htm)

Pat Mahoney's Salmon River Outdoors (http://www.salmonriveroutdoors.com/) - Has reports as recently as last week.

Salmon Hotline from Salmon River Sports (http://www.salmonhotline.com/hotline.htm) - They have reports from yesterday, but note that the river is currently unfishable due to cold weather.

i indirectly suggested this forum a few months ago and much to my surprise it was almost instantly created. this kind of question is exactly what i was looking for. i hope there are many more to follow.

i have never fished the salmon river but see it as extremely likely that i will soon. i know a lot of guys who go every year.

last year, winter was over by early march. i remember fishing hendricksons on the nissittisset during the third week of march. (and that definitely made my 'top five days' last year, this trout were going nuts.) this year being so cold, it doesn't look good as far as weather goes in march. that is ok though, the middle of march is a shade too early for me as far as trout go.

but steelhead! i have a four weight and nine weights. i think i should take a nine, right? what else?
