I'm thinking of finally plunking down some money for a kayak to car top on a Saturn wagon. I'll be using it in salt ponds, shallow bays, and tidal rivers.

I'm looking at the Old Town Loon 111 (polylink, not the expensive royalex). Any opinions on this one or suggestions of a competing make/model?

Also, is body color an issue when fishing? I know that yellow and red are better for safety but do the bright colors spook fish? I'm leaning toward green or granite (a bluish gray) but don't want to be invisible to boat traffic.

Thanks

I have always had a Natural color yak.Doesnt spook fish till your right on top of them.As far as safety goes you can see the paddle blades and life jacket long before the yak.

As far as competing yaks .Check out Wilderness Systems Pungo for sit in Tarpon for SOT.

I have seen yellow and red kayaks sit on top of fish as they swim underneith seemingly without being bothered.

Hey JS :)

I've got a monster yellow yak that has on many occasions had fish slamming into it while feeding. Color may bother some fish but not that I can tell. As for your model selection, try checking out these threads.

As you can see, we keep beating that horse but it just won't die :D

Ok, maybe they aren't true fish, but didn't I hear sharks on the left coast actually prefer yellow? :D

Go with a color you like, fish don't care and I think it's true that bright colored or reflective paddle blades and PFDs are more visible to boaters.

I have a yellow yak and as far as I could tell the color has no affect on stripers or blues. I couldn't tell you on other species. I fished Joppa flats and when paddling out I would literally bump into fish or have the swirl within a foot of the boat. During the 1st week of July there were large schools finning and I could get right next to them. Couldn't make em eat but thats another story.
When I was looking to buy I mentioned that I wanted yellow for safety and the response I got was the yellow was good if you were stranded but what really shows up when you're paddling was the blades. Between the movement and reflection they're a lot more noticable than the yak. By the way I have a mariner paddle , black with white blades.
Check out the mountain dew commercial with the whale. Its pretty funny.

Enjoy the yak and i hope you get towed a Lot!!!
