Spent a couple hours fishing around Deer island Rip with Riley on Saturday morning before the wind kicked up. Despite nasty forecasts, the water was pretty flat. We caught the end of the incoming and then the beginning of the outgoing and fished the inside edge of the shipping channel with clams. Caught one small crab and that's about it. I don't know what's wrong with us but we couldn't catch a cod if it swam up and spit water at us. My actual theory is that some of the Weakfish from down south came up and drove them all out. There were two other boats jigging as well near the light but left with no success. Sam did point out that there were large schools of Bait showing on the finder at several depths in the water column. General consensus: Herring. Always a good sign.
Later on in the morning, Riley was yelling and carrying on like a frat boy on spring break and mooned the passing Coast guard vessel that came over to find out what we might be doing anywhere near the shipping channel, in March, in kayaks. Rather perturbed about Sam's display of affection for the protectors of our harbor, they called in the big guns from Canada and ran us out.
