Just plunked down my tax refund for a blue Pungo 120 Angler at Bob Smith's Wilderness House sale. Should arrive in about 6 weeks. Came in a few bucks cheaper than RI prices I got. Thanks to all on this board for the advice. BSWH kayak & fishing salesguy Paul Wu was also very, very helpful.

See you out there.

Sorry to hear you got a PUNGO (and you too RAY)....

Do the new PUNGOS allow a rudder sys? I don't think soooo!

A rudder sys is invaluable and essential!

Tight Lines and BEST OF LUCK!.......

J and Ray,

Don't let Bluewater Mike rattle you. I just sent him the reasons (and they are many) I also chose a Pungo two years ago and again two weeks ago for a new, streamlined 140.

Rudders are nice, but if your yak has a chine and is resposive to the paddle rudders can be dispensed with.

I had a Pamlico (with rudder) and found it useful for that 70 pound almost 17 foot long battlewagon. But the 1st and 2nd Generation Pungos have an excellent chine and a long tail. They track exceedingly well. The multi-contoured hull is stable and moves through the water efficiently.

I would venture to say that more sit in yak fishing freaks use Pungos than any other brand name.

I am looking forward to the new Pungo 140 to be even more efficient and easier to use than almost any other recreational kayak used to catch saltwater fish. Two feet longer than the old Pungo and 1 inch narrower. t should crank right along! I traded in the Pamlico for the new P-140 and am keeping the older 12 foot Pungo for guests and the ocassional family member who wanders by my cabin.

Cheers!

Rudder, schmudder!

I bought it for the color!

The new Pungos apparently have a little more of a keel than past models.

If you do see me out there I'll be lagging behind in the slow blue Pungo 120 going around in circles because I have no rudder.

Seriously though, this seemed to be the perfect entry-level kayak for my purposes. Maybe I'll ugrade at a future date depending on how much I dig it.

It is a great kayak for you.It was my first yak also.Once you get out a few times try out a few other yaks to see if you like them better. After using yours a bunch of times you will have a much better feel for what you want to do with a fishing kayak.

Dont let them fool you about the rudder .Pungos track very well in all conditions. They are also pretty quick for a 12 ft kayak and can handle big sloppy water quite well. The downs for me were getting in\out\and back on .Speed and hitting the sides of the yak casting. After 1 year I knew that I wanted a bigger yak for extened range.

So take your time learn the sport and enjoy your new yak.Good luck and be safe.
