This is nothing new. Both areas have essntially been fished out for years. The Canadian govt. halted commercial fishing off Newfoundland and bought out the fishermen. After al the cod and haddock were gone they turned to the Capelin, the major food source of both stocks and of interest only to the Japanese who ealt the roe. It is unlikely that the cod and haddock or any of the other "groundfish" stocks will ever come back. The ocean bottom on the grand banks has been destroyed by the draggers.

If anyone needs an example of commercial greed this is it.
Ditto for Bluefin tuna. A CITES 1 listing is about the only thing that could save them now.
