Greetings,
Are any of you guys fishing from both a Yak and a bigger boat?
For the past few years I've been fishing out of a Big red Pamlico Excell Tandem. I got the big Tandem just incase one of my kids wanted to tag along and do some exploring with me & it worked out pretty good. But still it was limiting.
Paddles out to Monomoy were just too long for a kid and its just not wise to move outside to some of the rougher water areas.
So I took on a project this winter/Spring to restore an older Center Console. (Its called a Yankee Fibererglass) and looks like the Grand dad of the the Roth & Stage Point boats.
I thought the project was going to be a real pain but it was actually a lot easier than I thought & its almost done.
So I'm curious if any of you yakkers have an oppinion about which you prefer. I do love the convenience of the Yak and fishing off of Sunken Meadow for Blues or inside Nausset Inlet for Stripers. But I felt "at risk" in the Merrimack (Thats a big current when its moving).
But with the bigger boat it might make kid trips a little more relaxed. Just curious if any of you guys have gone this route.

Pete, I just starting kayaking last year and I love it. I also co-own a 17' center console with my brother. The boat is nice for when you want to take your friends fishing. Right now, I only know a couple of locals who fish from a kayak. The boat is also nice for long day trips and general lounging. But, as you will find out sooner or later, the old addage about a boat being a hole in the water that eats money is true. At least in my experience.

Guys: I also have a small ctr console for bigger waters. actually, the ctr console came before the yak. makes for a pretty good arsenal of approaches: wading, yakking or boating. wading and boating are great, but yakking is the "bomb" (as the kids say)! it opens SOOOOO much water that waders and bigger boat can't touch.

Pete,
If you feel "at risk" you probably are. The boat is the thing for the bigger waters and stronger currents. I've got a small Boston Whaler, and the 40 hp "outpaddles" my kayak in big currents every time.
The boat is, frankly, more comfortable to fish from. Tho not as convenient to launch and condusive to surgical strikes after work or when the window of opportunity is small.
As RIBill said, the yak is the bomb...it fills the gap between shore fishing and boat fishing wonderfully.
Waders, kayaks and boats all have their place.
Rockfishman,
Get rid of that Pamlico! I dumped mine for a new Pungo 140.
I originally bougth the big Pam so's I could fish and pick up chicks. Trouble was- Chicks and fish work different shifts.
Probably the same with kids!
The P-140 cruises and only weighs 50#. If you want to get out there see what a trade in will get and go with the Tarpon 120 or since your a manly sized man the Tarpon 160.
A pic. with you and JoeV with twin 40# stripers off Nauset would make the cover of OTW.
Grand Pa to a Rothbuilt-Hmmmm, you giving moon light cruises on N. Bay in July? I have these huge black eel flys you need to try out!

yep... I got the Pamlico tandem & a Pamlico excell Tandem ...The excell is huge its like paddling a barge but very stable & and tracks pretty good.
Since my kids are 2nd grade & 5th grade we still use the tandems. I take the excell & my wife takes the regular pamlico...the tandems work good for exploring some of the marshes as a family.
By the way I think the Pamlico Excell is the BEST show in town for a tandem that can handle 2 adults. The regular Pamlico is too small.
I've been screwing around building some small canoe type boats (learning how to work with epoxy)...now that I'm getting better with filets, sanding, & fairing. I think I'll start building some single yaks. and eventually switch away from the Pamlicos.
This is a pic of the boat I've been working on. Not big at 17' but still pretty cool.
