first yak bass of season and first fly bass as well.

launched where the fish are, at 2nd Beach. I've been wanting to "see" what the bottom looks like as you move offshore and out of the corner. also, having the yak would give me a chance to chase the cruising schools. bottomline: I probably won't do it again... the surf can be nasty and put the fishfinder etc at risk... once was enough. the schoolies cooperated and I can't tell you how good it felt to feel the fly come to a stop (a couple of the schoolies had shoulders).

left at low tide and ran to the Narrow River for the end of that ebb. River seemed barren except for one little guy. Didn't see any bait although terns were diving.

Next stop is Greenwich Bay for scouting... pretty sure that I can get a case of Bass Ale out of Shaun if I can find him a weakfish.

I'll see that and up it a keg :D

Tell us about the surf Bill. What was tough for you? Was it just getting past the beach break or was there more to it? Were you wearing a skirt?

Sam,

RIBill might look good in a kilt, but never a skirt! I know you have a fixation about weakfish, of I'm letting you know that the largest Tide Runners ever have invaded Raritan Ban in NJ and are hitting yellow and white clousers fished deep!

Bobby C passed it on to me this morning!

Bill, if you can find Weakfish for us I will arrange a clothing optional, keg included, tour of the Bass Ale brewery with your friend from Cabo. Oh, I didn't tell you, I snuck down there last weekend but all I could drag up was a coelacanth. I hear tide runners prefer water temps around 48.92. I think it was 48.91 the day I was there so I had no chance of seeing one.

skirt? them's fightin words...

no, the surf wasn't even that terrible yesterday but it is higly variable and I didn't want to take a bath or see the fishfinder take a bath. bringing the spray skirt would make too much sense. next, you'll want me to wear a seat belt ;-)

even worse was the return. I like doing some yaksurfing and have done a fair amount in the surf at Rockport (not always successfully), but the shoreline in the corner of 2nd Beach is nothing but rocks (not to mention discarded frags of concrete and asphalt ... what's that all about anyway?).

come on, am I getting any firm offers here... case of Bass if you hook up on a weak? and if you don't get a weak, I'll buy you a quart of mummies for the ride home.

RJ: good info, wish I was there. still waiting to see you post an '03 picture of a Hudson cow...

Greenwich Bay has produced some decent fish for me in the 3 days. Quite a few in the 28" range. Should be a few weaks around now. I seem to catch one weakfish a year during a worm hatch in GB. They are usually nice ones too. I'm gonna start yakking around Sally Rock soon. Heard that was a good spot. Got my first tog out of my yak monday at the stone bridge. Tough currents and unanchorable due to depth, current and rocks. Tried to anchor once in shallow 15'. Bye bye anchor. 3.5 hours for 3 fish. One went 20"ish, had to weigh 6 lbs.. Tons of them in there. My fish alarm was non-stop.

I've never seen the concrete you are talking about but there are several places in SE CT & RI that have big chunks of concrete in the shoreline left from houses destroyed in the "38 hurricane. Just a thought!

yes, ABF, the concrete slabs look like old sidewalks or bridge segments that they must have "installed" as a "seawall" to protect the road or something.

Brian: what color is your yak? I'll be in a two-tone blue Pungo. It'd be cool to see you out there. Glad to hear that you've already had some action, I'm 5 mins from there. and ssssshhhh on the weakfish stuff... if it sounds to easy, it'll kill my case of Bass (I'll share some with ya).

RIBill,

When you launch for Greenwich Bay after dark, where do you normally launch? Thanks.

Garth: there are numerous launch opportunities on the Bay and I'm sure there are more than what follows.

On the east side of the Bay, I put in at the parking lot at Goddard Park and troll between the east side of the channel that runs south into G'wich Harbor, and the beach. once the blues invade, and it won't be long, it'll be hard to find the stripers during daylight without the blues hitting first. from that launch, Sally Rock (actually a cluster of structure) is just north along the shore. around the corner from Sally, you have a straight run to Sandy Point and the big Bay. word of caution: be careful around Sally Rock at dawn, the clammers come out of the harbor in E. G'wich and roar right thru, off channel, and can wake a yak.

also, on the east side, there is a boat ramp in G'wich cove, accessible thru Goddard Park.

On the west side of G'wich Bay, you can put in at the E. G'wich town landing south of the Harbor proper. This ramp is useful in the fall as the cove fills with peanut bunker, bass and blues.

You can also launch in the northwest corner of G'wich Bay at the Marina at Arnold Neck near Ray's Bait Shop in the Apponaug section of Warwick. There is a herring run up there and maybe a worm hatch.

East from there and less user friendly (due to all the in-town travel) if you are coming from afar, is the state ramp at Oakland Beach. Gorgeous ramp that puts you northeast of Sally Rock (you need to cross a lot of water and the main channel ... fairly heavy traffic) but close to Warwick Neck (big waters, deep, and known for big bass and fluke).

Goddard Park should serve the needs of most of us yakkers. The Bay is good early in the season, and again in the fall. Summer water temps, and turbidity produced by all the boat traffic, send me packing for the cool clear waters of southern Narragansett Bay.

Evenings on the Bay are very pleasant and relatively sheltered for the next 30 days. see you out there... look for a blue yak and flag me down.

RIBill,
I've got a yellow Loon 138. Took it for a ride last night from Masthead to around Chepiwanoxet and back. Saw some herring on the surface. Not a bleep on the fish finder till I got back to Masthead. I made a pass by the wood pilings outside/ in front of the marina. Quite a few bass were sitting in there, only one was willing to cooperate though.

There is a hatch in Apponaug. I caught the end of one last year after leaving another hatch further south. It was in that grassy marsh area, right where it looks like there should be one. Also, an easy spot to throw a live buckie with a good shot a finding something.

Thanks RIBill. My plan is to hit RI Wednesday night and may try that area of the bay depending on weather and mood. I'm itching to hit the quonnie area but not sure I want to make the drive Weds. night.
