View Full Version : Ready To Go!!!!
Last night I installed 2 Scotty flush mounts behing the cockpit on my new Pungo 14. (nothing like drilling a bit-ass hole in a brand new boat, scary!!!) I also installed a set of paddle clips on the starbourd side. I plan on adding more tiedown point for carrying more "stuff" if needed.
So I'm ready to go. Hoping to get on the water this weekend.
I went with the flush mounts because I think they look better when rod holders are not installed.
Since I am new to kayak fishing I figure my craft will spend a fair amount of time inverted. There for I wanted something hydrodymanically correct :p

Ray: are you talking about the kind of rod holder where the rod handle slides into a hole, like you'd see on the gunwales of a powerboat? if so, look for caps for them. I know that Lee's makes stainless rodholders like that where a rubber cap closes the opening when not in use.
on the yak, that'll be big as the opening is on the deck outside the cowling. the cowling can keep wakes and "rogue" waves out of the cockpit fairly well, but an open rodholder will allow water washing over the deck to come in. that'd be a drag, at least, and maybe worse. just a thought.
have you decided where you first couple outings will be? lookin forward to the reports.

If you want a third Scotty you might want to check the Haba. Shaun and I were playing ultimate rod holder last night and it wound up in the drink.
I remember my first outing fondly... blue jeans, cotton sweater and sneakers... plus a mild surf launch... it's amazing how fast you will learn your lessons with a yak :D
Bill,
No, these mounts accept the Scotty rod holders, both spin and fly. They have caps for the times when a rod holder is not installed.
My first out was to my backyard. Caught a nice black cat, about 24 inches and 10 pounds.
Really, my first outing will be in Stony Creek CT Saturday early evening
