I was wondering if you could elaborate on this a bit:

"that secondary stability stuff is true of Pungos - once they get to a certain point they flip in a nanosecond!"

Thanks - JS

JSeamans,
First the disclaimer - I'm no expert on this. I just got my pungos last Spring so I'm still learning.

That said, shortly after buying them I took them to a pond to flip them and see how hard/easy re-entry is. It was enlightening to sit there and rock back and forth progressively pushing the limit.

What I recall the first time I rolled it is that it was difficult to rock it to the point where water is at the edge of the "deck". Once I pushed it a little further than that, though, I was surprised how fast I found myself in the drink.

Remember i was trying to flip, so I wasn't bracing with paddle but still there is a certain point at which taking a swim is inevitable. I would recommend everyone who kayaks in (or on) do this exercise. It's a good way to get the feel of the stability and an idea of what conditions that are too much for a given boat/paddler combo. Do the paddle float self rescue bit too. The fun of fishing ends abruptly the first time you don't come back!
