Fished last night w/3 old friends. Newbies interested in seeing what things are like. Should have waited a couple weeks. The highlight of the evening was a monster hit that got them all excited, but I have my suspicions that it was in fact a harbor seal at work, not a bass. I saw one about 5 minutes later down the island a bit. Sure hope it wasn't; don't even want to think about the potential ramifications, but there he was, though he seemed fine... I rigged the guys up with bronze hooks, but small consolation. Anyway, those seadogs are something.

Quick story: Two winters ago I lost a seaduck to one. Wading after the downed bird, I saw a massive swirl in the water only a few feet off from where I was headed. Any guesses as to the image materializing into my consciousness? Hint: I was born in '69, saw Jaws at 6 years old.

12 guage in hand, I barrel-assed away from the toothy maneating demon, and hanging thankfully by a clump of frozen barnacles, turned to look back from the jetty to see the sod taking the scoter with him. Damned thief.

Also lost a calico bass off S. CA coast a few years back to a sealion. On that one at least I managed to win a moral victory, and managed to get the head on board.

Anyone else had RSDs? That'd be 'real seal ordeals', BTW.

Anyway, nothing hit fresh herring, and nothing went after my plugs after 3 hours.

Car broke down earlier in the day. No fishing for me until Tuesday. Boo.

Years go I made a pair of goose decoys from some old cork. Turned out looking good but very heavy. One had a problem with the keel and would sway side to side in the current. While hunting in the Barnstable Harbor mashes, a seal attacked it. Afterwards it came up 10yds off and just kept staring at the decoy.
