Saw Jeff Palmer in 3 mile harbor as I got out Sunday morning. He said he had had good action in the mroning there earlier in the week, but that the bass all seemed a bit slow and picky due to water temps. Said he had only had 1 bite in a few hours there Sunday.

As I approached the jetties on the way out, saw a few terns working on something, took a few casts towards shore and picked up a micro bass and a 20 incher.

As I headed to Shelter Island, the cloud cover thinned so I headed to the shore of North Haven and saw a decent number of bass near shore. However, they were real lethargic - heck, I could barely spook them, didn't get a single fish to turn to the fly. Water temps at about 10 am were only about 54 in the shallows (about 5 degrees colder than 2 weeks ago).

With a little sun left, I tried Smith's cove but saw nothing and no bumbs casting structure.

Went to Peconic and drifted along Shell Beach. Saw some decent stripers, moving with more purpose, even had one turn on the fly before I lost visibility. Started blind casting the angle I had seen fish on and took my best fish of the year, a 30 inch bass with sea lice that never really ran but was reluctant to come to the boat. Water temp there was nearly 60.

Saw terns working outside in slightly deeper water (about 7 feet) but got nothing there.

Got some sun back and looked along the shore at Jessups Neck. Saw one fish explode in shallow water but that was it.

From what I saw on the North Haven shore, seems there are some fish around but we either need bait or some warming to get them more active on the flats.

I took out some non-fishing friends on Sunday afternoon and mostly just drove around while they flailed away, held spinning rods upside down, etc. No bass at Bostwick or the Ruins (just a seal). A few blues under birds at Bostwick and then again at around Cartwright. When cleaned, the blues from Cartwright were full of grass shrimp. The blue kept from Bostwick had what appeared to be a butterfish.
