Heading to souther NC (holden beach) in a couple of weeks and was wonder what type of fish this time of year can be caught from the surf and if you know any good fly recommendations. Holden Beach is an island and is seperated by a small waterway from the inland. I thought it might be best to concentrate on that instead of the open ocean but I could be wrong.

I was wondering the same thing, I will be in Alantic Beach near Morehead City the second week in June.

Holden Beach and AtlanticBeach/Morehead are two different areas are far as fishing goes in my opinion. Lot more fish concentrated around Morehead area, with some redfish, flatties, lots of blues and spanish, few speck trout, rays, croakers, spot, pompano all in the surf. Recently Bonita have continued to hang around the Lookout lighthouse area and may come with in casting range of the beach. There have been reports of Cobia being caught behind Shackleford that could be in casting range, havent heard of any this summer yet on the fly though.

Holden has mainly some flatties, some spainish, spot, croakers and a few blues in less numbers in comparison to the central "Crystal Coast." Atleast the Holden area does have some fish in the waterways behind the island too you might try.

Different color Clouser minnows and small deceivers will take fish, try different retrieves, bounce them along the bottom. I like chartreuse with flashabou.
