Can anyone comment on how consistent the tarpon fishing is near Destin/Panama City, FL in late June? I know that there are better hotspots, but I've just returned from Iraq and owe my family their choice of location. Also, how reliable is the fly fishing for jacks, cobia, king mackeral, or dolphin?

The fishing is good! I have fished that area a couple of times. Red fish, Trout, Spanish, Sharks, oh yeah and Tarpon all over the place. Nice flats in the bays, clear blue water, I mostly fish from a boat when I 'm down there but the wading looked good. Some decent fishing from the shore, Santa Rosa area. There are incredible bass ponds in the area as well. Enjoy there are worse places to be stationed.:-%

Tarpon are failry rare in the Chacwotea (not sure of spelling). Some tomes people hook up on one if they get lucky and supplesy there is a few schools of smaller ones in the bay. But as for the flats fishing = Good! Redfish, Jacks, Bluefish, LadyFish and then you go through the pass and get into cobia terroity along with bonita. My dad is station at Eglin and I fish the bay all the time (We just got a Bass Pro Shops!) . Anyway you being station at Eglin or Hulbert? I great fly club in the local area is the Emerlad Coast Fly Rodders.
