Hello all. I'm on vacation with family in New Jersey this week driving in from Boston on Monday and I've been hearing about monsters on the bunker in Monmouth county. I thought I'd bring the 'yak and see if I can't snag some live ones and go for a ride 'oer the bounding sea. :D

My questions are: where to get an update on locations of the bunker/bass? Also, what has been the success ratio for you 'yakkers? Have you been consistently able to find the schools? Lastly, some good and reasonably safe lauching locations for a recreational kayak, i.e. near paking and an inlet (or the beach assuming the surf is very light). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone out there wouldn't mind the company it would be great to have a paddling partner. Drop me a PM.

Regards,

Matt

I would hit Sandy Hook Bay from the Sandy Hook national recreation area. There are plenty of lots (fee required - I think it's free if you get there before 6 or 7am). Spermacetti and Horeshove cove can be good. In my opinion, choose an overcast day. 8wt or 9wt rods should work fine. Bass, Blues and Weakfish present.

I'm not sure if it's advisable to kayak off the Atlantic coast beaches. I don't kayak, so this is not an informed opinion, but it can get pretty choppy out there. Also, a lot of the inlets have so much boat traffic that it might not be any fun. Navesink river near Red Bank might be good. I've seen yakkers out there before.
