I've read a fair amount of posts on the subject of leaders for stripers. Most were from a couple of years ago and very informative.

With current technology as far as clear intermediate lines go, what would the recommended leader look like for stripers/weakfish today?

I'm thinking of tying a straight 6' section of 30# mono or floro to the clear fly line and tying my fly directly to it or using a clip between leader and fly. Has anyone worked with this type of simple rig successfully or is there a compelling reason to neck down leader from 40# to 25# down to 15#?

I guess if the water is crystal clear and the fish are spooky, I could always add a smaller diameter tippet to the 30# leader.

Thanks in advance for you're advise..

Hi,

With limited experience I will say this: You can certainly catch fish with that setup. It depends a little on conditions. I fish at night and use 15# fluoro as my standard tippet. If you plan to sight fish during the day in clear water I would go down to 10# or even 8# fluoro for the tippet. You just have to be a little more ginger when playing the fish.

I use mono and fluro in straight 20 & 30 # depending on which I grab out of my bag. Stripers hit wire...i got proof! So if blues are hanging around don't be afried to put on a small section of wire.
The longest leader I use are 5ft for Int; 4 ft for sink tips, havent fished a floater yet but would probaly go with a 5 or 6 ft
