View Full Version : Clobbering the little guys

My third spot for the night changed everything. I had been fishless at Revere Beach and the back of Belle Isle, but ended up beating up on a few schoolie bass to perhaps 6-8 pounds. I was kind of cheating, I guess; on a hunch I stopped to check a spot on the water sporting a few very bright lights. Before I could even see the water I heard fish busting on the surface.

I hustled back to the car to grab a light spinning rod (I orignally had planned on just looking around) and as I got to the water, looked down to see dozens of dark shapes cutting through schools of baitfish just below the surface. Yes! The bait: small guys, 4" max, grey on top, silver sided (sorry, my bait ID skills are a bit lacking). A couple bigger bass, to 36" or so, were lazily cruising just at the surface.

Got into fish consistently for a bit over an hour, caught and released perhaps 13-15 fish to 24". No interest showed by any of the bigger guys I initially saw.

It sure wasn't a master's game, but being able to look down and watch fish emerge out of the shadows, power up and nail the jig right below me provided some great fun. Watching them roll and head back down hooked was too cool. I usuallly don't sight fish, so this was a treat for me. Best night yet this year as far as numbers caught. Continuing signs of better things to come, I hope.
