View Full Version : East-End Bi-ped
I will be one of the touristas heading out to the Montauk area for the holiday weekend. I will not be armed with a cell phone like most, instead, I'll have my 8 and 10weights with 275 and 375 grains as well as a couple of intermediate lines. Any spots a fisherman on foot could hit and avoid large crowds of sunbathers would be greatly appreciated. The last time I was out there I hit Gin Beach for a few fish, but I'm guessing there will be a few more people out there this weekend! I'll be in S.Hampton for one night and in Montauk for Saturday night. Long walks are not a problem as I make hikes for solitude here in CT. Many thanks!
I'm not looking for anyone's secret spots. Just general info, like north or south shores? Sand-eels, spearing, or larger baits? I'm not looking for the steak, I'd be satisfied with table scraps. Thanks!
Scraps may be all that's available.
Try both sides of the lighthouse (I got my only bass last Saturday around there).
As to bait, I didn't see any. It was my first trip to Montauk this year.
The back bays have small sand eels and spearing, so I guess those are good bets.
(Shh, lets keep the lighthouse thing a secret :})
Tuna, what's up with telling about the lighthouse. Isn't anything secret anymore!!!
H2O. As long as you fish east of town, you wont' find many sunbathers. Surfcasters are another story.
You've got about 4 miles from town east to the light that will be pretty empty due to access limitation. Once you get within 1/2 mile of the light you will see more people. Any of the rocky points along here can be productive. Particularly the last mile to the light.
I would stay clear of the light. The surfcasters will be thick and will not take kindly to you whipping your line past their heads. Once you get halfway from the llight to Shagwong the surf guys will thin out somewhat. Around shagwong is Gin Beach which you have fished before.
Try and get out on a rock to get some height and distance to your casts, but be careful. If you're not comfortable you can catch fish right in the wash from shore. Korkers are a must!
I prefer the rocks about 1/2 mile west of the light as long as it's not crowded or between the light and Shagwong.
Good luck.
Awesome! Thanks a lot guys!
Have a great 4th!
