I am new to fly fishing, and was hoping for some advice on what type and size of tippet, line and backing to use for surf fishing. I have a 9wt. rod and reel. Also any advice on flies would also be great.
Thanks!

You can't go wrong with chartreuse and white colusers anywhere in Florida. Also white combined with any combination of blue, light brown, root beer flash, and black. Deceivers work well in similar colors. Shrimp and crab patterns work in some areas. You might even get some tarpon flies, ask the locals what’s working.

As for tippet go with some bonefish or red fish leader, and get an assortment of tippet sizes. You will want some Fluorocarbon tippet as well probably 25, and 50 LB if you get into some Barracudas.

On a 9wt I would run at least 30 lb backing.

I hope this helps, call some local shops or go in and talk with some one. Getting good local knowledge will be the biggest help. Have fun and enjoy you are lucky to live where you do the fishing is diverse and some of those fish are huge!!!!!
