I found a decent deal on some Depth Charge sinking head wonderline. It has a 30 foot sinking head with a 70 foot intermediate running line. I was thinking of using it when I fish fresh water lakes for striper. The last time I striper fished I was using floating line which worked well while the fish were up schooling and busting bait on the surface. When they would go back down i would have to wait for a long while until they came back up. Then I would have to get to within casting distance before they went back down.I was thinking I could use this line to fish for the fish after they went down.I could see them on the sonar at about 12 feet.
Has anyone used this particular line?
Would it be good for the situation described above?
Does anyone have any better suggestions?
I have read that you should downsize this line ( 7/8 line for 8/9 rod ).I read that it casts much better and farther that way.
Is there any truth to this?

The orvis depth charge is the best sinking line out there, get the 300gr or 350gr for a 8/9wt set up, if it is a moderate action rod you might want to try a 250gr. These lines are shooting heads and thats exactly what they do, the line shoots like crazy and make you feel like a casting pro.

As for the the line wt to rod wt question, in most cases people OVER load the rod, so if you have a 9wt rod, they get 10wt lines(intermiadate, floating), it helps load the rod, especially if you are battling heavy winds or a bulky fly BUT with depth charge or sinking lines, the line is already heavy as it is, so stick with what the companies recommend or what is suited to the action of your rod.

I just learned a bunch on the subject when I was contemplating putting 400gr on my 9wt. I decided to go with 350gr so not to over load the rod too much.

Search the thread '400gr DC for 9wt' for more info

Hope this helps,
