Fished Port O'Connor this week with minimal success. Spent most of time around Lighthouse Cove/Big Pocket/Fish Pond/Pringle/Rahal area. Water/weather was beautiful. Minimal success with artificials, so resorted to live croaker (something I rarely do) and caught a few nice 21-22 inch trout and the usual 16-18 inchers. Nothing on the Longstick, although the effort was there. The only pod of tailing reds was seen in Powderhorn Lake, and as luck would have it, my longstick was back at the boat,.............reds wouldn't touch a gold spoon, which is rare indeed. Ran into a herd of big reds in Big Pocket..... ~30 big reds in that bunch, scored one right off the bat and they scattered, then searched for an hour without re-locating them. Even the guides were having a bad day, they were observed to pull up to the usual reefs and sandbars, toss a few baits, then leave without success. The fish cleaning tables were devoid of the usual successful anglers.
Clark's restaurant is back in business with the original owners at the helm, the food was excellent,...give 'em a try.
Will return next week or so, might head out to Green's/Cotton's area, always a red or two out there to tug on my 6wt.

I fished The surf down here on South Padre island saturday and caught several bonnetheads and 1 scalloped hammerhead shark.Not exactly what I was shooting for.Tried the surf sunday morn whith the fly rod with no success.There was fish exploding and birds working about 500+ yards out.Just a little out of casting range. LOL

Woulda figured the surf to be a hotspot at this time of year.
Any action over at Pt. Mansfield? That's one of my favorite fishin' venues during the fall after the summer winds have died out. Particularly on outgoing tide, position yourself between the south islands in the East Cut, and ambush the reds as they slowly forage against the gentle current. If one wanted to, he could set up a table, chair, Bar-B-Q pit and a cooler of beer and spend hours in that small area......perfect, as any breeze would be to your back! Done it many times, give it a try. I use a 6wt and Clousers, a Deciever would work, also.

I would love to try it out but it sounds to me like I would need a boat to get to where you are talking about.Unless you are talking about the old cut through Padre island that has now filled in. One can drive up the beach then walk across to the bay side and fish it.The next time you decide to do what you mentioned be sure and let me know.I now only have weekends off but I am raring to go.
The surf is hot but should get much hotter later as the year winds down.
I'm pretty new to fly fishing and I don't know anyone else down here who would not want to charge me 350 buck to fish with me.So I go by my self most of the time. Everyone that fly fishes here thinks they are a guide. I ran into one of the hot shot fly fishers the other day and tried to carry on a conversation with him.That was like trying to get blood from a turnip.As if I was trying to steel from him.I mentioned that I would like to have a few pointer on my casting. He replied " I get 35 $ an hour ". What he does not realise is , give me a solid year at practicing this fly casting and I will probly be better then he is,. I don't know much about it yet but I would be glad to show anyone interrested, all i know for free.LOL
How did I get off on this subject anyway.

Yes Port mansfield is one of the prettiest wade fishing places Ive seen.A fly fishers dream.although I have not been up there much.I postly fish down here around Padre and Port Isabel.

Will keep you in mind. Been wanting to do P.M. this fall, will give you a hollar some time. Last time I was there I took wife.................took me all day to find the reds, finally did at ~5:30p.m............leaving about 3 good hours of daylight to chase 'em. One herd of ~15, another herd 200yds. away ~30 reds. Popped 2 right off the bat..............then wife decided it was time to go home. Left 'em biting'! Wife no longer fishes with this angler.

Did you run her off are just stop taking her.Mine went with me saturday to fish the surf.We caught a bunch of small sharks.I couldn't get her to leave the rods alone.Every time I would turn around she was jerking on one of them.Most of the time I bait them and throw them out and put them in rod holder and watch them.There is realy no need to mess with it until one of them bows over.All those little pecks are usualy hard heads picking at it.I'm the one who has to rebait and cast It back out.
Ive got a boat but i need a 25 or 30 hp tiller stear motor for it.They are hard to come by in good shape and reasonable.A new merc is about 2 grand.I have people asking 1000 to 1500 for a 20 year old motor.If I ever find one for it the bay fish will not be safe.I know of a place they call little bahama's that is accessable by boat.It is acres of less than knee deep water with almost white sand bottom.It is supposed to be a lot of fun to fly fish for reds and such.

Working on new contract down your way. If I get it, we need to go to that area. Is it that small bay that is south of South Padre?

The small bay south af Padre is called South bay.If I am not mistaken the little bahama is about 8 miles north on the inside of padre island in the laguna madre bay.
