What do you all think of using a Shimano TLD 25 for BFT up to a few hundred pounds, it's a 50 class reel, so I was thinking of spooling it up with 50lb PPro. I figure I could fit around 1000 yards on there, down side being the cost of spooling the reel (at least $80) and rod recomendations, I was thinking about the Penn Formula standup rods.

T hank's in advance,

mike

I have a TLD 20 that has battled many a tarpon in the >100# class. But BFT's? (I presume are Big F.....' Tuna)....they have different body and tail configurations that make them much stronger swimmers than tarpon. I think a >125# tuna would be too much fish for the TLD 25; would probably burn out the drag in the first run, might even rip the guts out of the reel. Anything larger than a 125# tuna would mandate at least a Penn International 50W.

Regarding the line...I use plain 'ol Ande Green 30# on my TLD 20. It is much less expensive than the High-dollar Ande Tournament 30#

for what it's worth, i realize they're a different animal all together, but i used to get schoolie blue fin up to 50lbs on the now out of production TLD10. that reel is more than 12 years old and is still ticking just fine. i also have the 15 and 25, which are still available, but have only used them on stripers and bluefish.
