Tuna on a Lasso

Any stripers being caught in the bay on a fly rod? I been going out but haven't had much luck yet. Does anyone know of a good surf spot to take a fly rod?
I have been trying berkeley and the brick yard but no luck so far. I would love to meet up with someone that has fished these places and knows their way around it. I just moved here from the east and have been missing the striper action on the cape.

Any luck? My brother lives in SF and I've been telling him he should give it a try.

Seems the bay area striper guys are keeping quiet!
I used to live in Marin County, right at the beginning of my striper career. I was a terrible caster, but I still managed to catch a few in two different places. The best and most beautiful spot I fished was the Rocks at East Fort Baker. Almost under the northern end of the GG bridge. Big rip and a few fish as well. The other spot I used to frequent was a flood control tank east of Novato. Small fish got pushed into the tank by the flood tide and eventually grew too big to leave through the grate. Good 16"-18" schoolies in there. You can find it on a map. Atherton Road exit off of 101. Anyway, I probably upset a lot of bay area fisherman by giving those spots away, but I have been given great advice on this site, and its all about sharing.
Good luck

It is possible to catch stripers on the bay on a fly rod. I can't comment about the east bay, my experience is purely on the ocean/SF side of the bay. I believe they are in the Delta this time of year so at worst you could drive two hours and hire a guide there. Fishing is best early in the morning or late at night, this way you also avoid the dog walkers. If you are casting into the surf you don't need to cast very far as most action is very near the shore.
The flats around Crissy Field, Candlestick Point, and San Pablo Bay are all spots for stripers as well as for halibut. Under the golden gate is another spot, but I don't think you could fly fish that. I have seen stripers feeding on the surface around the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza, but I don't know how to fish it yet. When the fish are at see they can be caught on almost any oceanside beach, but they are not concentrated anywhere. I would check http://www.fliesunlimited.com/index.html.

yes, but mostly in the summer months. its all about time on the water. on the SF/ ocean side it also has everything to do with the bait. yesterday the bait was in the middle of the bay, so there was literally nothing going on on the beaches. the other prime problem is the sea lions. while their presence indicates fish, it also means the fish aren't biting.

Are you the guy who lassoed a tuna on Monomoy a year or two ago? I heard about that story in a fly shop in North Dakota. Way to go!

The fishing has been good one day and sketchy the next. Try point San Quentin, it's got great room for a back cast. It's going to start picking up soon! I catch most on the incomming and all between 3-7 Lbs.

Greetings Tuna roper,
I've fished stripers in Boston Harbor and seen the stripers caught here in the Bay Area. My uncle still lives there and routinely (in the summer) sends me photos of his 42" stripers. The sad news is that the West Coast variety are maybe 25-50% the size of the East Coasters. My guess is that given your experience there, you'll probably be good at spotting the bird and baitfish indicators. Here, the stripers move around quite a bit, and they go well upstream into the freshwater Delta.
