I attempted to tag my first bass last night and ended up torturing the poor guy. After poking him two times I let him go. I tried to handle him as little as possible and keep him out of the kayak, but could not tag him quickly. It was suggested to me to grab his tail. Based on my first experience and not wanting to play with needles in the dark, I didn't try his suggestion with future fish. Any thoughts for tagging fish out of a SINK with minimal handling? I don't know if there are different systems, but I have the ALS tagging system of a hollow needle with plastic tag. They suggest tying an overhand knot, but won't this slip? Should I tie two overhand knots?

Thanks.

Hey Garth,
It's been a while since I've tagged a fish but my system didn't require knots. There was a hollow needle in which you put a barbed plastic tag. I was able to lip a fish with one hand, drape it over the side of my yak and insert the tag with the other hand. A little awkward but it was quick once I got the hang of it. How are knots used in your system?

Hi Sam,

Good luck on Saturday morning. The tagging system is a hollow needle to push through the fish. The tag is a small peice of hollow tubing about 6-8" long. No barbs. The instructions tell you to tie a knot. I like the barb better as tying a knot on a live fish in your kayak could be more time consuming. However, once I get the hang of it I'll be a better judge. Lets hope we both have good Saturday's.
