Normal cruising speed, how fast does a typical person paddle in MPH?

Thanks.

Hey Garth -
Depends on the person, yak, load and conditions but for a reference, Shaun and I were averaging 4mph over 2 days and 40 miles of paddling in Cape Cod Bay.

I paddle pretty leisurely unless I'm trying to get to some bustin fish. On average I would say 2 - 3 mph. But as I am fishing I'm usually taking it pretty easy. Hate to overlook areas even if they don't look "fishy".

I remember last year Sam and I tried some speed stuff with his GPS on a relatively calm day. We could maintain 6 mph for longer distance sprints, 1/4 mile or so. I am confident that I have broken 7-8 mph maybe more chasing Tunoids. I am talking a hundred yard sprint, leaned into, back off the backrest, legs pumping on the pegs, but sliding off the seat, out of breath kind of sprint though. Nothing I could maintain over any length of time.

Mike was it all chase or did the paddling pay off?

--124-3 Due to my 4 by-pass I keep everything slowly. It's difficult I paddle more than 15 miles a day and I don't cover more than 1 & 1/2 mile per hour. Many times I don't find action before 4 miles paddling. Fortunately in the last weeks I found schools of dorados within one mile, so I had fun without paddling so much.
I live close to the 5 terre, ligurian sea, Italy.--123-3

kalamaiofly - do you have any pics of the dorado you catch? That must be a pretty cool ride! I am jealous...

--124-3 Sorry, no piks. I don't bring any camera when I go fishing. No kayak-buddies and no chances for piks. Dorados, this year, are small; 2 to 6 pounds and very spooky too.

Checked my speed today on the GPS in Duxbury Bay. I paddled at an average of about 4mph. Total trip including fishing was about 1.5 hours.
