Got a late start this (9/28) morning or should I say afternoon. Was not planning on fishing since it was so foggy, instead, I planned a South Shore recon trip. I wanted to check out Duxbury and Plymouth to find places to launch the yak, places other than the usual paved boat ramps.
My first stop in Duxbury at the Standish(?) landing was as far as I got. Talked with a guy that was just coming in with his kids and 3 keepers. All about 34+". He said it was loaded with fish out near Bug Light. That is all he needed to say to convince me to give it a try.
Loaded up the yak, added the landing waypoint to the GPS and headed east. The visability at this point was about a quarter mile due to the fog. I could just barely make out a channel marker so I headed for it. Marked it on the GPS and continued east. I was lucky to find three more channel markers to add to the GPS. By this time the fog had started to lift and I could just make out the tip of the Gurnet and Clarks Island. This is when I started seeing the bird action. Under them were Stripers, porposing and tail slapping the water.
The first fish on was an 18” rat. I thought it was going to be a twinkie fest all day. Then the next one hit, it was a 36 incher. I paddled around for a while chasing the birds and hooking up to more fish between 18 and 34”. Then I hooked into something really big. This was the first fish that I have caught in the yak that I could not turn. So there I was getting pulled around the bay by a fish. After about 5 minutes it tiered and I was able to start gaining some ground on it. When I finally got it to the yak it I was barely able to lift it with one hand to unhook it. It was 42” and had to push 30lbs.
I chased the fish for another half hour before heading in. The fog came in heavy at that point. 100-yard visibility. Glad I put some waypoints in the GPS.
The hardest part of the fishing was working through all the weed in the water. If you could retrieve the lure 2-3 feet and have it clean you would be lucky. I have never seen weed so thick. It was the long eel grass type. The Terns that dove into the water would come out with pieces hanging off them. Kind of funny actually.
This has to be one of the best years for fish that I can remember. I often wonder if the fishing better or is it the yak that makes it better.
Total trip was 5 miles and a lot of fish.
:D
