Shaun and I met up at Herring Cove Beach and paddled into pea soup fog around 7am on Saturday. For the next two hours, we hung within a quarter mile of the beach as visibility was down to 50 yards at best. The wire line jigging fleet was out in full force in the rips off Race Point and radio chatter spoke up a steady pick of fish up to the low 40s. Our plan was to head north for a few miles but Shaun and I were a little wary of heading out away from the boat traffic in fog. You see, kayaks don’t show up on radar as we learned when a guy in monster Grady White came flying up, running just by electronic vision. I’m going to start bringing some tin foil to wave these guys off. By 9am the fog had cleared enough and the boat traffic got crazy enough for us to shoot northward. Within minutes we were surrounded by FAC seas and blue sky. We made it out to the SW corner of the bank in good time but aside from one promising bit of activity that caught Shaun’s eye, we didn’t find fish or birds working. I had to be off the water by 2pm so we had to pack it in around 12:30. Easy paddle back but for the last three miles. Dogging it around the point into the wind and against the current tacked on another hour to our trip. Radio chatter spoke of action in the middle of the bay… oh well. Maybe next time.
