1st you have to decide what type of yak you want - a sit in kind or a sit on top, and thats just a personal decision. I have the sit on top type - a tarpon 120 from wilderness system , and I wouldn't own anything different - it's stable, easy to get in and out of, and has plenty of storage. You should check out out the web site kayakfishingstuff.com there's a ton of info on that site to help you with all your questions.:)

Yes there is alot of good useful information on this limited KAYAK forum, but if you want more indepth information about kayak - what types, safty issues, fishing gear, very knowledgable kayak fisherman, the web site mentioned is a very good one.

Clouser, Tell us a little more about yourself, for example heght weight, general area fishing that type of thing. This will help suggest where you can get started. Try every boat you can get your hands on. I know this has been said a million times but its like buying a bigger boat or a car, there may be a few with the same bells and whistles but each one "fits" differently for different people. Unfortunately it takes time and trying a few boats to make a decision that you are happy with. Don't be afraid to get one you will grow into a little as well. Where do you live? This will help send you to a store that may offer some demos to take out. The more info you can give, the more people here, and the other site, will be able to help you. Have you looked at any? Do you know if you would rather a Sit on Top or Sit inside? Is speed or distance going to be a concern or would you rather wide and stable? Just some questions to think about when asking or trying boats at a shop. In the FAQ forum under the kayak forum thre are a few threads that can help answer some of these questions.

They are stable .Like Shaun said if you want us to help we need some more info.Where do you plan on fishing and what for. There are a bunch of fishing kayaks out there. Some better than others .Some have pros some have cons.Stabilty is over rated cause once you get the hang of it you are good to go.It only takes a few times out to get rid of that tippy feeling.
Ther is alot of info here .Just start reading alot of the past threads. As far as the website mentioned you wont find a better site for info for that. There is a article page that has a bunch of info.Rigging pictures and tips.
Also a newbie forum where you can find answers and suggestions for just about everything.
Or if you want just ask us here .There are a bunch of hardcore guys here who do it all. Some even catch smelt :D

Clouser Where are you located ?
Sounds like you plan on fishing esturies and rivers.
Do you plan on going out front in the ocean ?
Do you plan on yak/wading ?(means taking your yak out to flats or shoals and wading them off the yak)A SOT is much better for that since its much easier to get in/out.
SOTs to check out
Wilderness Systems
Tarpon 120/140/160
These yaks are the most popular right now.
I would recommend any of them.
