before you start, get a golfing tee.

open while I let the epoxy dry on the body. It gives is a good shape and will add a little pop to the retrieve. Cut about half of the stem off of the tee and insert the tee into the mouth just far enough to spread the mouth. Once the epoxy sets up, remove the tee and let it finish drying.

I don't know if you have seen this article, but it has a pretty good example on cutting out a pattern for bodies. Good luck.

Another good source is to contact Lefty Ray Chapa. He ties and uses a lot of these...and does a real good job.

Let me know how things turn out.

Great idea on the golf tee. I always wondered how you kept the foam open.

Thanks

that you can position it to open the mouth as much or as little as you want. I've got to give credit Lefty Ray for showing me that tip, as much as I would like to claim it as my idea. I've had a blast with these in the surf with specs and jacks.

I tie a rattle on top of the hookand then bond the foam to that. It gives you more to stick to and holds the mouth open. You can buy rattles at Walmart in the lure section, they stick them in rubber worms. Rattles in flies are also the secret weapon for Northern Pike.
