My son recently moved to Charleston, S.C. The closest to Charleston I have fished the salt is Rye, N.H. What is the striper fishing like near Charleston? So long as I am asking, what other species of inshore saltwater gamefish can be found in the area? What time of year is best for each? Do you have any suggestions for guides in the area who concentrate on fly fishing? Thanks in advance for your help.

The main targets for flyfishing this fall/winter in Charleston will be trout and redfish. They are plentiful inshore. Most anglers that I know use a 7 -9 weight for the reds - some go a little lighter for the trout. I know some stripers are caught in the area, but don't know any that target them.

The most consistent striper fishing near Charleston is in the Savannah River. The fishing heats up about now and runs through April. There are also several huge lakes that have good populations of stripers. The Saluda River in Columbia also has decent striper fishing in the spring and early summer.
Most of the fishing around Charleston requires a boat. There is great fishing for trouts and reds in most of the creeks. Even the ICW has decent fishing for reds and trout. Reds are available year round. Trout tend to be spring and fall targets. We're entering prime season for fishing in the Carolinas. Like anywhere else, you just need to do your homework.
There are a ton of guides in the area. The only guy that I've fished with is JR Waits (fishcall.com). He knows the area well.
