Don't know of it's ok to put links to other sites but check this out for a chuckle.

I have wondered if it is possible to stand on a kayak and fish....despite the pics I still don't think it is possible.

I've stood a couple of times in my Cobra FND. The biggest problem, getting up. Once up you can stand briefly if the seas are calm. I've never cast a fly standing in my kayak; no guts.

It's possible to stand in some kayaks on very flat water, but it's impossible to feel at ease fishing in this position.
For those who prefer standing for fishing or other important activities there's this boat:

Casting standing @ sea (http://www.wavewalk.com/ARTICLE%20ON%20FISHING.html) :D

Whatever that thing is suppose to be it sure aint no kayak. Pretty cool though if you don't mind limited range.

Hi Sam,
The W isn't a kayak, of course - I'd say it's more of a new, "Personal Catamaran" platform.
By "limited range" do you mean time, storage capacity or sea-worthiness?
This boat is in fact good for paddling long distances at sea, including in less than favorable conditions.
It's pretty fast too - people who see it go on water tend to think it's longer than it actually is...

The W boat....

I was also intrigued by this boat a couple months ago. I called the inventor, since he local and tried one of the pre-production models. This poster may even be the inventor...I dunno.

It's different, but it does really shine in calmer waters for flyfishing. I could stand easily and paddle or fish. Gave me great visibility.

I agree it's not for our ocean going striper trips. I would not want flip this boat and it catches the wind too much. It was not fast, it's probably faster than a wide kayak of the equal length. It's only 10ft.

I'de say when the conditions are right it's fun boat to use.
Flexibility of positions was quite nice too. It's something different and interesting.

Call me a skeptic but I'd bet that it would be a real pain paddling into the wind. From the pics, it is a very high craft and the paddler sits even higher still. I think that Cats are suppose to be more efficient though so there may be something to it. Where is our resident engineering geek?

Well Sam, skepticism is at the basis of all scientific investigation, isn't it?!
All I'll admit is that it's not easy to paddle against the wind in the standiing position.
However,in all other positions it's great. When I paddle on windy days in normally crowded places like the Charles River I'm often the only paddleboat around.
:(
Some of the wind coming from the front goes into the "tunnel" between the hulls, so the surface facing the wind is not a large one.
As for side wind, the boat's small size and good tracking capabilities it "inherited" from its Polynesian ancestors really help.

Tamnoon, for a big guy that has trouble getting his butt into a yak that might be a viable alternative.
It also looks like it would make a good hunting craft for up in the marshes if one could get it in a less visable color.
It's configuration looks like you could add a small electric motor to it as well.

Your thoughts?

Hey Bob,
I've paddled that thing together with another guy about my size (6' / 190 lb) and we were OK, although neither of us would have liked to spend the whole day like that...

:D
I often paddle it with my two kids sitting inside (their aggregated weight is about 90 lb) and it's fine -, even in terms of speed.
I've never tried it with a motor, but I suppose it will work pretty well. It could be nice to put two batteries in - one at the bottom of each hull.

Going back to the poling platform, that's Serge. He's quite successful with the big bonefish down here. Of note: Serge's frame makes it easier for him to stand on the yak (WS Ride) than say, my frame does. :D
