10/11 Did the dawn patrol and hit the beach at daybreak. Found great conditions for the yak but where were the fish. Saw the birds flying North and decided to look up by Kettle Island and found nothing. Drifted back along the rocks nothing again. Lotsa boats moving around which said it all. Gave up around 9:30.
10/12 What a difference a day makes. Conditions were sloppy. A good swell coming in with a lot of chop and showers. As I drove up to Black beach I saw a big flock of birds working off the Crow Island point. Despite the swell I put in and managed to get out without getting soaked. Paddled out and found fish breaking sporadically and threw them a crease fly. Three casts later a fat 20" fish. Kept casting and catching evry few casts. All between 20 & 25". Saw the birds start up again off of Coolidge Pt. so paddled over trolling my fly. Got hit hard had the fish on for a few seconds and ping fly gone. Probably a Blue. Got to the fish tied on another crease and proceeded to have a ball. Lost count on the # of fish I caught also lost count on the # of hits but no hook up. Way more than the hook ups. Hooked to a 5 - 6 lb blue that tore up the fly pretty good. So after releasing him I put on a popper. 3rd cast and I saw the dorsal and tail of a really large fish porpoise right on the popper. I struck and she took off. Fought a good fight to a stand still. I couldn't budge her but she wasn't gaining either. After a minute or two of this the line goes slack. Damn. Got the popper back but really disappointed as I could tell this would have been the biggest fish of the season. Anyway, I stayed around catching fish all morning as they seemed to stay in the area. Occasionaly coming up in blitzes but more often sporadically hitting here and there. I stayed in Kettle cove most of the morning. I did lose my popper to a fish but about 10 minutes later I saw it floating a few feet away so I got that one back at least.
The weather was anything but nice. The one good thing was when the rain hit the water layed down. There were still big swells coming in but the chop was considerably less. All in all it was a great morning. Not many more of these left up here on the North Shore. I'll keep going though.
