Just finished a floating sand eel. This one is spun deer hair on a long shanked Umpqua hook (usually used for small squid)... Spun with olive on top and white on the bottom.. The tail is tied in first with 4 long olive hackles on top and three long white on the bottom with the base feathers intact. Long pearl saltwater flashaobou as the first application under the hackles. Eyes are bunt into the dear hair then gooped in.They are small Puglisi eyes. Fly is 8 inches long.

Nice looking fly, i think a largemouth bass would love it too.

Looks very similar to a Bob Lindquist fly pattern.

striblue I just double checked his patterns he uses EP Fiber as a tail and not hackles like you do. But he does use the olive/white spun deer hair on the shank.

Thanks Flyrodder.... I also intend to tye others with either a thin coat of epoxy or softex type application to increase durability and water soak.... I don't think it will effect bouyancy..But we shall see.

Striblue, I tied up a few of those about a month ago when the stripers were feeding like crazy....deer hair is just a lot of fun. I used your sand eel popper you showed a several months ago (it was a hard body with jungle cock eyes and an epoxy coating) as a model. The deer hair floats pretty good. I tried the Soft tex and it made the fly heavier and it was a little trickier to cast.

Bill Catherwood uses Nitrate Dope for his hair head flies, its real airplane glue used to mend cloth airplane wings. It penetrates into the hair and cloth thread to make it much more durable without effecting the outward appearance of the head. You may also want to spray the head with silicone to keep it more boyant.

Thanks Stan... I will try and speak with Catherwood this Thursday night at the Burlington UFT meeting... He will be tying so this may be an opportunity to pick his brain.
