I'm from PA and plan on trying my luck Flyfishing for Stripers. I heard Sandy Hook has a lot of good beaches on both the ocean and bay sides. I plan on doing a scouting run within a few weeks. Any info would really help
Thanks

its a really big area with lots of different options. there are at least 6 accessible parking lots on the ocean side, and the river side is fairly easy to get to as well. the fish, from my experience move around a bit, so it may take a while to find out what part of the beach they are hitting. Best bet is to ask at one of the tackle shops on the way in, and I have found them to be pretty helpful. You'll also run into other fisherman who have been on the beach recently, and they'll be your best source of info. It can be a really hot spot if you're in the right place at the right time. I had my two best days for bass out of any place I've been at sandy hook this fall, so I'll be back again this year. good luck

Hi-
Sandy Hook isnt the best spot to go just yet. For more predictable success in April and mid may you belong up the rivers.Remember, the bass are in prespawn mode and have other things on thier minds besides eating clousers. The bass under 27" or so are about as well but they are programmed to migrate like grownups, even though they arent going to reproduce.
Good Luck!

Capt. Paul:
When you say up the rivers in April and May, does that mean primarily up the big spawning rivers like the Delaware and Hudson? Or is there value in smaller coastal rivers? Do stripers ascend smaller rivers (the Navesink, say) to spawn?
Thanks for your always informative contributions.
Peter
The fish ascend the Navesink, Shrewsbury as well as the Raritan Rivers early in the spring. They will also be found back, way back, in the bay early on.
