I like to use natural bucktail for most of my wings on my saltwater flies but when I go to a synthetic I like Ultra Hair . Is there a better material that I should use.? There are some many materials to chose that it gets confusing as to which one to use.

Stick with the Ultra Hair,it will last alot longer on the hook than bucktail. I tied some decievers this fall with it .all on the top of the hook shank, they took a beating from the bigger fish that a bucktail might have only lasted 2 or 3 fish (stripers)

I got to tell you. I went through many types of synthetics. From Ultra hair to Super hair and the one that I am convinced of is put out by Orvis and it's called Unique hair. If you haven't yet tried it you should. That's about all I use now. I do at times mix in a little Fluoro Fibre as well.

Ditto on the unique hair. It's simultaneously strong and supple in the water.

I also would go with the unique hair.

One thing to remeber is that ..when you do sand eels... both unique hair and Super hair can tangle up after awhile...but if you carry a small hair brush it is easier to get the fly back into shape with super hair than unique hair...but the diameter of unique hair is great as Double Haul says... I use both... and I am now tying them with Slinky fiber, which is like fiber blend or Kinky fiber... With that material I will epoxy down the shaft to minimize even greater fouling and tangling than either the unique hair or super hair. A simple but extremly effective fly. This one is with the Slinky or Kinky fiber. The slinky fiber has great new colors with some blending... this one has a blend of black in ti which you can just make out. The color is called Seaweed... there is Misty green, Mottled chartruse, silver back, natural,Chartruese(basic), and olive... ALL are slight variarions of green.
