I use a Mustad #34011 hook, size #1- #2/0. Use a white or light colored thread. I recommend 6/0. Start near the eye and wrap the hook shank. Stop before you reach a point above the tip of the hook. You will be tying on a few materials at the back of the hook. It will help the appearance of the fly if you keep your wraps to a minimum. First material you tie on is a sparse amount of long bucktail. You want all the hairs to be long, at least as long as the hook shank. When you tie them on the hook do not allow the hairs to flair. Next material is a couple of long thin white hackles, a little longer than the bucktail. Over that you tie two or three stands of pearl crystal flash. Lock this stuff down with three half hitches. Cut the thread, but not close to the half hitches, leave 8-10 inches of thread hanging off the hook. Next tie on crystal chenille. Wrap the crystal chenille forward, stop well before the eye of the hook. A good guide as to where to stop might be the diameter of the stick on eyes you are using. This is the tuff part. You need really long bucktail. I use olive or brown. At the top of the hook near the eye tie in a small amount of bucktail. The hairs all need to be very long. Over this tie on some peacock herl, I use 3- 5 strands. Pull the olive or brown bucktail and peacock herl back so it lies right over the top of the hook, and is tight. Take the thread that you left at the back of the hook and secure the bucktail/peacock herl. Multiple coats of a thin cement on the wraps at the rear of the hook. Build up the head with wraps of thread. Color the top of the head with a marking pen that matches the bucktail color. Apply cement, stick on eyes, and more cement. Stuff to watch out for and variations - sometimes with larger hooks you need to tie in the dark colored bucktail at the rear and front of the hook. The diameter of the crystal chenille needs to be matched to the size of the hook, and sometimes it helps to clip the crystal chenille on top of the hook before you tie in the dark bucktail. I like to use monofilament thread for the head of the fly. I use epoxy on the head. I like tying this fly as a flatwing. I find that with a single hackle tied flatwing stlye the fly rocks between strips and is much more flashy.

Thanks for the thanks. As a individual with no typing skills putting those words down took some serious time. I had to do it though, I tied the Flashy Eel for one of the swaps last year, (and I think it is a great pattern).
