an 8wt with a sink tip is a good choice. I think the ultimate set up is a spey rod 9/10.

lots of guys fish the jetties at both boca chica and port mansfield on spi. you will have to dodge bait chunkers and spin fishers as well as the tourists who think it looks cool. also we have a contingent of boaters and jetskiers who think that we need company. there is also often a wind problem so if you can't cast into the wind work the lee side. our minimum casts are probably 35 to 40 feet but longer is better to keep the line off the rocks. the channel seems to be best on a moving tide. you will need cleats for the jetties or risk breaking both you and your equipment. personally i would not recommend anything less than a 10 wt. since tarpon are present on occasion. intermediates and sink tips. despite all the hazards and distractions there are fish available but you will lose a lot to rocks and the idiotic behavior of your fellow jettites. check with larry at the shopas you go through port isabel. he generally has the dope.
