I live in NC, and have fished for stripers with a baitcasters for a few years now. I would like to catch some of these hard fighting fish with my flyrod. I will be fishing in lakes. I was just wondering what weight flyrod I should use? Also what type of flys work the best? I have only fished for these fish in the winter and early spring when it is cold, but would like to know if you can catch them on a fly during the late spring and early fall when it is warmer. I will gladly take any hints you can give me.
Thanks,
Matt

I would use a 9 wt. rod, although you probably could get by with a lesser wt. depending on fish size. Fish clousers and half and halfs on sinking line. Start with Chart/White.
That should get you started!
Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. The stripers that I normally catch is in the 5 to 10 lb range on the baitcasters. What size tippets would you use. I normally fish with 12 lb test on my baitcasters.
Thanks,
Matt

i fish for stripers in the ocean in massachusetts and use a 9 weight. but i think the bigger rod is necessary for the big winds and possibbility of fish up to 25-30lbs. you would probably be better suited with a 7 weight especially if you mostly fish in freshwater.
