Looks like the squid have it! January 2004 Squid swap is now open. Due date will be Februrary 15th.

Anything goes as long as it has tentacles!

The FAQ thread applies. I will continue to update the status of the sign up here.

Also, Take some pics of your flies along the way, the swaps always generate great work! Add them to the Pattern Library here on RT through the Tying Page, we could use some squid patterns.

Shaun,

Sign me up.

I don't think the pattern has a name. Call it the long squid.

Count me in too. I'll tie up a dozen of my 2Cent Squid. Just when you thought there was nothing you could do with the fuzzy end on your hackles...

hope this works, but this is what I am planning on tying this is my first squid pattern fairly simple so let me know what you think. Fly is approximately 4 inches long. Proper retrieve is a strip every 10 seconds while erratically twitching the rod.

Hello,

New to the site - came across the squid forum and would like to enter a new creation for the swap. My inspiration for the fly stems from popovic's siliclone w/ a lip and my contribution of using curled ribbon (similar to those on top of presents) to create the ribbon squid. The only field tests that the fly has seen so far are confined to my bathroom sink, however, I am still amazed at the life-like action of the tenacles created by the curled ribbon. Durabilty and castabilty are up in the air. I would say that as long as a blue doesn't lock down on it, it should hold up. Heck, the frayed tenacles might even add more action to the fly, if one does (as long as they aren't pulled out- the thread turns are zapagaped). The fly is considerably light, so I speculate casting will not be a problem. I am working on finding a more realistic color to use for the body - red is the only fleece that I had at the time - but it looks pretty good. I put a light coat of epoxy(soft body works too) over the top to form a durable encasement and the lip was first formed using silicone (Pop Fleyes) and then covered with a light coat of epoxy, too. (added glitter while mixing epoxy) Well, enjoy! Sorry if the picture is huge...

Shaun,

Now that the holidays are behind us, I'll join you for this swap.

For lack of a name, I'll submit the SoCo Squid. It is something I whipped up, dunno if it is in any pattern books or websites or if someone's done something like it before. Haven't looked. I'll add a pic when I get a chance.

Ok I think I can crank out some squid flies by Feb 15th. Add me in.
I use a color variation of what I think is basically the shady lady.

Hi folks! I'm new to this group, but not to fly fishing - I've been at it in the salt for better than five years, and too many years to mention in the trout streams.

I'd like to get in on this creative calamari swap - please count me in! I've been fiddling around with a few squid patterns and have come up with one I think will do the job. For the lack of a better name, I'll call it the "Squidinator". I have no pictures of it just yet, but will try to post one by tomorrow.

This is a little over 3" long with a Polar Aire body coated with a little Hard as Nails and a Marabou and Flashabou tail on a 1/O Gamakatsu Big game hook.

Nice looking squid! Looks much better than mine. The usual colors, sili legs, hackle/marabou tentacles, braid mantle, pink chanille underneith. Rabbit fur collar. The instructions should be up in the library in a few days. Its about 9" total length.

Shaun, I like the tubing for the body idea, are those black hackles I see mixed in with the white ? What are those hot pink strips ?

At the Marlboro show, Jamie Boyle was tying up some sweet looking squid using super hair for the rear part of the squid, and this new stuff called mirror image, I think, for the front collar, great shine, great shape. Anyone else see him tying ?

Shaun, your squid looks great! I was going to use the bunny fur collar on my pattern, but ended up using the craft fur - only because I ran out of hot pink bunny!

Freak - You mean this squid?

The pink are Sili legs, about 3".
No black hackles, just shaddows.

shaun, nice photo, i never thought to bring my digital camera to the show.
Instead, i stood there and watched him tie 6 of them and then purchased
a ton of materials. : (#$119)
