Now that I have a real boat, I am planning on spending a good bit of time chasing SBFT and Sharks.... problem is, money will be a little tight the first few seasons. I have no idea how to begin but have been reading up on the subject. Since I will probably be both casting and trolling, what would you guys recommend for rods and reels? Since I am comfortable with baitcasters, I was thinking that one rig could be used for both if I could find the right reel These Okuma Reels (http://www.okumafishing.com/products/reels/convector/convector.htm) look like they could handle some big fish and the price is much lower than any others I've seen.
Any and all help that you guys could offer this newbie would be greatly appreciated :)

Hey Sam,
I'm in the same boat as you (no pun intended). I just bought a boat and am trying to outfit it with tackle. I trolled for stripers in the 60's and used Penn reels. Mariner is a great reel.
I found lots of good older reels on ebay at reasonable costs for inshore. The rods are harder to come across. Be selective and you will get some good buys.
My 2 cents.

Hi Guys, I'm probably stating the obvious, so accept my apology in advance, but I've noticed some interesting tackle, both fly & spin, in the Want Ad lately. -- Phil

Thanks guys. I'm on a new track now. Found Shimano TLD15s for $110. About the same price and a much better rep than Okuma from what I've been reading.

That are probably 15+ years old (bought from Adams Tackle in Pembroke, if that helps date them). Great reels. Never had any trouble with them. They have been fished hard, and not overly well cared for. A little spray of water from the hose and an lubrication.
Very occassional...like once a year.

I am stuck between the Shimano TLD 15 (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jhtml?id=0002024312147a&navAction=push&navCount=2&indexId=cat390023&podId=0002024&catalogCode=IE&parentId=cat390023&parentType=index&rid=&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fcatalog%2Fitem-link.jhtml.1_A&_DAV=MainCatcat390001&hasJS=true) and the New Shimano Torium 20 (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/horizontal-item.jhtml?id=0022062317062a&navAction=push&navCount=2&indexId=cat390023&podId=0022062&catalogCode=IE&parentId=cat390023&parentType=index&rid=&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fcatalog%2Fitem-link.jhtml.1_A&_DAV=MainCatcat390001&hasJS=true)
Both have similar capacity but the differences are:
Price- TLD $120 , Torium $170
Drag- TLD w/ lever , Torium w/ star
Ratio- TLD @ 1:4 , Torium @ 1:6
Body- TLD is graphite , Torium is aluminum
Which do you guys think would be a better all around reel for casting to and trolling for Tuna and Shark?
Many thanks
