The easiest way to see what's going on here is to click the New Post link at the center of the brown bar beneath your name (or if you are not logged in, beneath the login box. When you click it, it shows you all the new posts since you last marked the forums read.
When you have read all the new posts, click "Quick Links" and select "Mark Forums Read" - it makes it really quick to check the forums, especially when you're at the office an limited for time.
