Shaun and I had our tip-ups set by 7:30am yesterday morning and had landed a Rainbow, Small Mouth and two Large Mouth by 8:30am.... looked promising. The fishing died down after that though and the wind kicked up making things a little unpleasant. By noon we decided to pack it in but just before I pulled the tip-up from our super secret magic hole, a hefty Large Mouth took off a runnin. Nice end to a good half day of fishing :)

That pic doesn't do that bass justice. There was a solid 8"+ of clear black ice under an inch of snow. That's gonna be here for a while, hopefully making the conversion from ice to salt a quick one!--127-3-

Wow....Thats a very nice fish ... I use to catch nothing but smallmouth in that pond. By the way those fish are tough so congratulations!!! did you get him on a shiner?

Yep, shiner. Last year we did pretty well with smallmouth. Got 1 early before th fishing shut off yesterday. The couple we got last year were monsters as far as smallmouth go. Also had monster perch but they were a no show yesterday.

That pond has some of the healthiest smallmouth I've ever seen (and there are tons of them) in the spring I would see huge schools (100's!!) of decent fish milling around & getting ready to spawn but I always had a tough time getting them to bite. I spent years fishing that pond picking up only a few but once I saw a guy in a boat come up by me and he had it figured out and was nailing em ...getting hits on every cast. I watched him like a hawk & couldn't figure out what that suttle little thing was that he did. I was using a rubber worm & he was using a Salamander with a slip sinker but he was nailing em!!! yep I bought salamanders matching his color ...but still got snubbed. That place was the first place I had a freshwater fish bring me into my backing. I was in a cove (S/W corner on the way to the train tracks) and nailed a nice 19' smallmouth on a little hare's ear nymph I thought that was one of the mega browns but turned out to be a very nice bass. If your fishing Walden then you might as well try White's pond too. White's always has some nice big trout.
