I went back and read lots of the old threads about rod racks for inside your vehicle. Many of them were a few years old so I am wondering about newer models or the experience you've now had with them. I am thinking about the rodmounts one but I seem think that I've read about a similar one to the rodmounts where the forward holder is U shaped so you aren't trying to aim your rod tip through a hole, though I haven't found anything like that in my seaches on the web. Another factor I'm concerned with is the hanging height of the rod tips in terms of clearance over the driver's & passengers heads which has got me thinking....if I got creative and made something where the rods set down into a u shaped padded surface of some sort, are they going to bounce up & out or would the weight of the reel be enough to hold them? Have any of you made something like this?

Rod tips do usually go all the way up to the windshield. what if you put the rod mounts diagonal in the car so they ended before the windshield?

I put black eye-straps on both sides and strung a luggage shoulder strap between them in front and back of my Explorer. (They worked so well on the previous truck I reinstalled them on the new one) They do begin to sag but they're adjustable and I use the velcro wire ties, about a quarter inch wide and a foot long to keep the rods from sliding towards the centerline. I can hang most of my flyrods (under 9') but have to break down the 9'6". Works for me!

I have a bungee in the rearmost part of the 'burban and one just aft of the middle seat. Each had a set of four velcro cable ties lashed at intervals .

Each bungee is secured at ends with a sheet metal screw into the headliner at the ends and at the middle. Rods are slid from the rear above the bungee and secured with the velcro cable tie.

At the very aft of the vehicle I have spring loaded broomclip type holders screwed into the plastic trim inside the door. These grab the reel seat aft of either the fly or spinning reel.

I have used this system since '99 and have stored everything from 5 foot ultralight spinners to 9 weights with this method. I have even had Alex the Lab share the space with rods stored without mishap. The biggest problem I have faced is snagging the headliner with spinning lures I was too lazy to remove.

Search for a system called, " Rod Loft." I don't have it yet, but will this coming season.

My LLBean Fly Fishing catalog came today and the RodLoft Pro is in it for $119. Doesn't look bad, but no mention of being able to get additional holders. I'll try a search.
