Took a look at it today on line. Not bad. It looks to be a bit smaller than the Orvis model but as for the price you cant beat it.

That's a more realistic price for a piece of plastic. Now it will be Stripping Baskets: New school, Old school or Old money school.
Pete
Old school makes their own, new school buys one.(#$119)
Really cool old school uses a piece of old lobster pot rope that washed up on the beach. None of this sissy bungy cord or tool belt stuff! (#$110)
Really, really cool old school is so good they don't use one 'cause they cast from the dry sand > hook up on every cast > reel in their line landing the fish > repeat... --125-3
Oh & I would buy one if I wasn't so cheap!!

I ordered one today too. I was going to order the cone insert from Hunters and epoxy it into my Rubbermaid special, but for just a few bucks more this Bean basket is a great deal. And it's got a molded in rod cradle. Nice.
here she is the new basket!!
I too saw it tonight in the catalog, and it looks like it will do the same job as the Orvis one for alot less.
I am still using the rubber maid with the tie raps, home made, but I may just go to the "new school" approach and buy one.
Though I loce and have tons of Bean products, I'm sticking with my Orvis ones.
I see the Bean one doesn't have a combing. I wonder if plashes on the sides result in more water coming in?

If it didn't already have a couple of drainage holes I'm sure you could drill it. A small hole probably wouldn't hurt and if you wanted to plug it I bet those foam ear plugs that you squeeze down, insert in ear and they expand back wouldn't interfere with the fly line too badly and would plug the hole.

even an Orvis basket isn't going to stop whitewater and or waves from getting in the basket, the wash tub I was using has a rim around it and it didn't stop the water from getting in

If water wants to get in it will get in. A couple of holes as stated above just may work. I'm thinking about getting one also for primarily bay work as my old homemade one has alot of drainage holes cut in it.

I just saw the catalog, too, and it looks like a great product and, yes, a lot cheaper than the Orvis model. It also has a nice body forming curve to it which makes it less bulky. Looks good!
The Orvis basket also comes with a 1-year CCA membership. Of course it's up to the buyer to accept the membership. That's $25 right there.
Either way both products do the job.

So true. This just gives another option for the consumer which is always a good thing. (anyone think if the Bean product takes off Orvis will be forced to lower it's price?)

So your paying an for a membership if you want it or not - isn't that nice of Orvis for the choice - (#$119)

I don't think so. As Ray mentioned, that CCA membership was part of the reason I brought the Orvis basket. That holds value in my books.
Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

value to me, is saving $ 25.00, looking @ the Orvis web site, they contribute 5% of pre taxed Profits to a number of enviornmental organizations, which they should - their products profit margins are so inflated they should be giving 20% to 30% I read nothing on the site, that if you bought their basket, a membership was included - if it does though thats great. If you feel your doing your part by buying that basket and helping the enviornment thats great, for me when I'm wading me favorite area's in Plymouth I bring a trash bag and pick up the shoreline when I'm done fishing, I catch fish with barbless hooks, and I catch and release - that's how I feel I'm doing my VERY small part.
The message on the Orvis site is not clear that the membership is included. Orvis and CCA have had this relationship for years.

The LL Bean basket is supposed to be the same size as the Orvis tray, only it has rounded edges which makes it look smaller... So I heard!

I read a couple of reviews on other sites from guys who've fished already with the Bean stripping basket. They're totally happy with it, don't have any problem with the fact that the edges aren't "rolled", water hasn't come into the basket and they're happy they've save $25 over the Orvis basket. They like the curved design, the tough 2" belt which doesn't curl like the Orvis basket belt and the $ savings. First time purchasers of a stripping basket, I think, will buy the Bean design and if anything ever happens to their Orvis model, I think those, too, will give the Bean basket a try. Who wouldn't? It looks like a fine design. And, yes, now that they've got competition, I think the Orvis $45 basket will be reduced in price for some "vague" reason.

The price always was a problem. I remeber the first time I saw the Orvis basket and thought wow I gotta have me one of those! When I learn't the price it took another couple of months thinking before I eventually parted with my cash... And then I got it at trade price, which I think was still to much money for what is basicly a washing-up bowl!
Nothing like competition to move those prices.

agree it looks nice and cheaper may be better for its intended use. however is it deep enough to prevent wind blowing out line? i also like to save waders by not sitting on my usual fishing spot of barnacles and having my ass rip a new hole by shifting weight. sit on my orvis basket with no problem and it doesnt cave in. i weigh 225 suited up. just an idea about sturdy basket doubling as a seat. honestly if i had not just replaced my orvis basket (lost it when i let it go in near drowning) i would have tried the bean one. i use the bean collapsible for light travel and sometimes with streamer trout fishing to the far bank. also helps with chuck and duck.

dementions are 10" x 16" x 6" deep and strong enough to hold my fat arss 180 lbs.- though feeling the thickness of the plastic, I believe it would hold your too ;)
I guess I'm a new old school fly fishermen. 2 baskets for the boat showed up at the house this weekend.
Having used a dish pan or nothing I'm not crazy about how heavy they are. Otherwise - nice design, nice product.

You mean they are heavier than my good old dishpan ;)
Yep Roop, that was my first reaction too. Nice but much heavier that the good old home made one.

That Bean Basket sure does look nice.
I have one of the Orvis ones, and bought it mainly for the CCA membership. After resubscribing 3 years in a row I have found that I don't much like reading about fishing in Texas for Reds.
Also that the CCA in Massachusetts is kind of a joke. No, not kind of, it is a joke.
Maybe a drive to LL Bean for a couple of those baskets on a nice spring day.

I have a habit of leaving my stripping basket on the floor of the boat when I'm not using it. So far I've lost two "dish tubs" that way. So even though I really like the looks of the commercal basket and see that the ll bean is at least reasonably priced I think I will stick with the homemade one.
Sage why waste a nice spring day going to llbean when you could be fishing. Go on a rotten miserable day to avoid the guilt.
