I am heading down to Tortola in a couple of weeks. Any info as to where to fish and what to use would be greatly appreciated. I am planning on bringing an 8 wt and an a light spinning rod.
Thanks

saltyric-

I'm headed to Tortola and environs as well in mid-February and had asked the same question awhile back. Have a look at the following thread for some related info that I found most helpful:

If you can't click the link then cut and paste should work.

When are you headed down anyway?

Thanks for the feedback. I will be heading down on Feb 7th, for ten days. I plan to fish as much as possible. You?

I'm headed down on the 11th for ten days myself. I'll be fishing as much as I can as well (chartering a motor boat) between stops. Looks like you'll have a few days head start... you staying on Tortola the whole time? Sounds like Tarpon around to be found...

Fly fished around the island last March. We chartered a sailboat that had a little dingy and worked the flats early in the morn for bones. A local gave me a Borski's grayish brown shrimp fly with a weed guard. Without a hook guard you don't have a chance on the weedy flats. Had the best success at sunrise with the tide coming in. Wading for the bones was a challenge. Some spots that produced fish were: the East flats of Fat Hogs Bay, the reef at Maya Cove, Marina Cay and the break between Jost Van Dyke & Little Jost Van Dyke. Saw some nice tarpon at night while anchored at Marina Cay in the boatlight. Hooked a big tarpon on a Rhody flatwing in Great Harbor, Peter Island right before the floating rope in the Northeast corner. We battled the fish for 45 min on a 9wt and released at the boat in the dark.
