I know it's almost 6 months away but I can't help getting excited --127-3-
I have 2 weeks booked in the "Secrets Capri Riviera" hotel in PDC and am looking forward to some great bonefishing (and hopefully permit, tarpon and snook). My travel dates are 7th June to 21st June - my question - "will any of you be anywhere near me during these 2 weeks??"

If you are I would love to share the experience and a drink or two (and maybe car hire costs, guiding costs, etc.). E-mail me or respond to this thread if you are there for all or part of these 2 weeks.

Regards,

Hello Phil,
I tried to e-mail you but your profile suggests you do not want to receive e-mails. Where are you going to be doing your bonefishing and with who/lodge? Let me know your plans. Leave your e-mail so we can discuss this.

Hi Tim and thanks for responding,

As yet I have planned/booked nothing except the hotel. I will be on holiday with my wife who is happy to lay on a beach all day with her books - however, I can't be seen to be fishing too much !!
I have read several threads on the forums and I think I may need to hire a car to get me to some of the better known places. However, Cozumel is also within easy reach by ferry from PDC (I have read) and there are various guides who will meet you from the ferry.

Do you think I need to book guides now or can I wait a while??

I don't want to rely on guides too much preffering the DIY approach but I may use guides for a day or two early on in my vacation to help me iron out a few wrinkles and to put me on some fish.

The hotel where we will be staying is shown here:

http://www.secretsresorts.com/capri/index.html

Any help you can offer me would be gratefully received. Do you live near PDC or are you going to be on vacation at the same time as me??

Kind Regards,

Phil

Hi Gonzo,

Stinging me quite bad but I must say it's alot cheaper than some of the places that we have been to in recent years (e.g. Antigua, Genada). I'm assuming your Gonzo of www.oceanflies.com fame ??
If so, then you can help me out with my supplies before I go. I'm not a great one to be sat behind bench and vice especially for SWFF flies as I only get to use them 2 or 3 times a year --124-3 ....................... there again, when I win the lottery --125-3

Phil

Yes its me! --127-3- Don't you just love this crazy banana!

What type of flies are you looking for and in what sort of sizes. In fact it would probably be better to e-mail me direct with any requests.

Hi,

A little off the subject, but still might be of some use. Was down in PDC over christmas w/ my folks. Went bonefishing for my first time over in cozumel(w/ a guide reccomended by a reel-timer) and had a great trip. Though it was my first time, there seemed to be lots of fish in there that readily took my flies. I had a shot @ a permit, but it wasn't interested. The guide's name is Alex Euan and he is based out of cozumel. I definitely reccomend him and believe his prices are pretty reasonable.

Also had great luck blind casting to large jacks, small albies, baracuda, gar and lady fish from the beach. It was awesome action out there. Generally the best fishing was right after the last hotel towards the undeveloped area. Look for clear bands in water churned up by the surf. Fish seemed most active in mid morning and mid afternoon(strange). I imagine conditions could be totally different in june. The fish were all over my small epoxy sand eel imitations that we tie for flats fishing on the cape. I'm not sure why, as they were not nearly as aggresive when I fished w/ flies that appeared to better mimic the prey i saw in the water and being chased by busting fish. Great action, as you never know what is on the other end of your line, and i managed to pick up some big jacks that took me far into my backing. If you try it, just watch your back cast.Tons of folks walk the beach down there. I managed to hook a jogger in the thigh when I got a little too excited over some breaking fish. I told him he needed to watch where he jogged.
Have fun.

I was also down in Mexico just after Christmas and fished with Alex Euan as well. Also got the recommendation from another reel-timer. Alex was great. Very good guide, friendly, found lots of fish and very reasonable prices. Didn't see another person all day.

His website is www.cozumel.net/fun/fly-fishing/

I would highly recommend fishing with him if you are going to be in the area.

Hi All

I have now booked Alex Euan for a couple of days based on your advice

However, I still have 12 other days to fill --127-3-

Therefore I am looking at renting a car to get me to places such as Boca Paila, Ascension Bay, etc. What I need to know are the distances and type of roads involved and to this end I am trying to source a map(s) of the local area.
Does anyone know of a good source for maps of this area - or does someone have one they can scan in?? Any help greatly appreciated. You can mail me at:

Thanks and kind regards,

Hi, Head to mexico :-% 2-3 times a year....(keep this a secret) You can both stay at most 5 star resorts for the cost of 1 fishing trip to , say Andros. Now,
Maps....search Cancun Map Chick.....find a remote resort (Sunscape Tulum is my 1st choice).....for fishing bones and jacks....2 miles of beach north and south.....Stayed at the Palladium Resort in Jan 04....Jacks, and some bones...
one monster 5 lbr (big for the area). mostly 2-3 lbr's...ton of fun when you catch the tide just right....fished every morning til around 11....cleaned off my gear while sipping a cold beer....I was happy....she was happy....life was good....of course now I had to buy her a bone outfit (T-3 Orvis with a Ross canyon 5).....No ...she cannot use my TCR !!! that's where I draw the line....

I am so glad I found this thread.
We will be staying at the most southern resort in PDC.
Only there for 5 days so fishing will consist of mostly mornings(I have a lot of small kids).
There is going to be a full moon while we are staying. Does anyone know the affect a full moon will have on fishing?

Fishing the resort beaches of the Mayan Riviera is great fun. Be persistent and you'll likely find yourself a population of bones all to yourself. Fishing the full moon is alot of fun too. This time of year look for some fast action from Snook, Jacks and Ladyfish in the first trough out from the sand beaches...litterally under your rod-tip. Chart/White Clausers in sizes 2-4 work great for all. If the Carribean is rough...look for clear spots between the plumes and rips and keep your eye open for sardina's and busting fish. It's an awesome sight when a school of jacks come marauding in and tearing through the bait. Be prepared to run down the beach to cut em off at the pass so to speak. Keep your eye open for pelicans and terns...they love to dive on your fly.

Regards and have a nice time.

Hi Phil! Thanks for the great report. Can you give me a breakdown of your total costs( hotel, transportation, guide). I am always looking out for a tropical flyfishing destination that I can squeeze into my budget. wittich.
